CHAPTER SEVENTEEN

On this particular Friday, Aisling had been given the latitude to select what kind of training she’d like to do. She’d decided it would be a good opportunity to work with Shimmer and Brodie together before she got involved with the construction of the Mark II version of the dragon. She had already reinforced the skeleton around the claws and tail and had printed and attached the sharp metal pieces Brodie had designed. But they hadn’t had a chance to test them out before today.

She and Shimmer arrived at the fabrication level, only to meet Brodie exiting through the airlock toward the stairwell with his ever-present tablet in his hands. He grinned. “I saw you coming on the cameras. We need to head downstairs.”

Aisling frowned. “The training area?”

“Not quite.” They descended several levels and emerged onto a level she hadn’t been to. When she’d passed it during previous visits to lower floors, she’d assumed the area beyond the door was closed up. They each checked through the airlock, which had been programmed to recognize Shimmer as an employee, and stepped into darkness.

Brodie clapped his hands in a strange cadence and lights came on to illuminate the space. Aisling gasped, “Holy hell. Why haven’t I seen this?” The room was enormous and empty. The walls and floor were made up of white square tiles and the ceiling was all black, except for the lights and numerous other orbs and devices she didn’t recognize.

His laughter echoed around the vacant space. “Welcome to my playroom.”

“When do I get a playroom?”

“You have an office. Be content.”

Aisling snorted. “With that? Hardly.”

Dragonfly’s technical expert laughed louder. “I’m pretty sure those offices are a ploy by the higher-ups to force you all out into the field as much as humanly possible.”

“That would do it.”

He asked, “What do you think of the place, Shimmer?”

The dragon looked up at Brodie. “It is very open. What does it do?”

Brodie held up his tablet. “Let me show you.” His fingers danced over it, and the room came to life. First, sound began playing in the background, something that drew from Celtic music but was on the line between rock ’n’ roll and heavy metal. Next, several floor panels lit up. A part of it glowed green, while another part glowed red. “Let’s do some baseline tests, shall we? Shimmer, head over to the green spot.”

The dragon flew through the intervening space to land on the indicated squares. A series of tiles lit up to create a route from that place to the red block. Brodie instructed, “When I say go, I want you to run that route as fast as possible. Stay on the path. No flying.”

Shimmer replied, “Acknowledged.”

Brodie pushed a button on his tablet. “Go.” The dragon complied and raced from one to the other. “Good, now go back to green.” The next path had more curves in it but didn’t seem to present much more of a challenge to Shimmer. The one after that was downright serpentine.

Aisling asked, “Are you timing him?”

Brodie nodded.
